"Hold'im Down, Brer Fox" by Julius Lester
Goops and How to Be Them: Table Manners II

This dates back to 1900 – the page turn to the 20th century. I expect it must have been passed down to my mom from her mom, both of whom LOVED books and reading, based on the child’s signature (my mom’s) in pencil inside the cover. I remember this first poem from my childhood and delighting in it. The lengthy subtitle is: A Manual of Manners for Polite Infants. I find it interesting how the language and vocabulary are not simplified for youngsters. I like that.
