About the Author
About the Authors
In addition to his long teaching career, Mike Mirabella enjoyed 50 years as an ASCAP singer-songwriter. In 1988 he published a limited-edition CD anthology entitled Special People, still available on the website below.
In 2016 Mike started to publish children’s books, using his already published songs. His first children’s book was entitled, On the Luck of an Irish Sailor, based on a story-song he wrote at 15 years of age. It was recorded much later by the legendary Shay Black, the eldest of Ireland’s renowned Black Family.
Mike then published his two-book series called The Carla Stories about inclusion, belonging, and compassion for his daughter, Carla Elaine, who was born with Down’s syndrome.
In 2020 Mike published Book 1 of The Carla Stories, entitled Sister Butterfly, written and sung by Mike. It includes a bonus song entitled “I Am So Like You,” co-written by Mike and Lenny Lipton. The song was sung by Mike and his daughter, Kelly Ann Mirabella Jeans.
In 2022 Mike published Book 2, entitled I Used to Be Shy, co-written by Mike and Lenny Lipton, sung by Mike and Kathy Way. A bonus song, “Little Brown Pony,” was co-written by Mike and Lenny Lipton.
Coming soon will be the Book 3 of The Carla Stories entitled Special People and an audiobook, based on how Carla’s amazing life inspired others who knew and loved her to be more creative and excel past social limits and personal expectations.
About Lenny: Among his many accomplishments, Leonard Lipton
received a Smithsonian Award for his invention of Crystal Eyes, the first
stereoscopic electronic eyewear. He wrote Foundations of the
Stereoscopic Cinema (1982) and was a Fellow of the SMPTE (Society of
Motion Picture and Television Engineers) and SPIE (the International
Society for Optics and Photonics). He was a member of the Board of
Directors Executive Committee of the Advanced Imaging Society and a
recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award. While a student at Cornell,
Lenny wrote the beloved song “Puff the Magic Dragon,” sung by Peter,
Paul and Mary.
The outstanding illustrations in our books were drawn by the talented Amy O’Hanlon, an inspired artist who does stage production designs for several musicals, one of which was the Bay Area Children’s Theatre’s ‘She Persisted’, based on the book by Chelsea Clinton.

“I Used to Be Shy continues in the gentle tone of Sister Butterfly (book 1 in The Carla Stories). Set against a bright playful landscape, the spirit of Carla holds out a hand to a shy boy, bringing him out of the shadows of shyness into the light of inclusion among new friends. This touching little musical story is a gift tied with a colorful bow of art.”
— Elizabeth Pealed Norris, MA, MED, Teacher and Poet, Oakland, CA
“Inclusiveness can be hard to express or turn into action. I Used to Be Shy illustrates the power of love as it can change hearts and minds. Encouraging kindness is needed now, more than ever, for children and grownups. We can all be part of Camp ALLBELONG through the magic of Mike Mirabella and Lenny Lipton’s words and music. This book comes from the heart. Learning to accept ourselves and our differences is central to being kind and resilient.”

A. J. Shuck
I first saw Singing In The Rain when I was 5 years old and it had a profound effect on me. I remember finding my grandma’s cane and doing the “Make ‘Em Laugh” routine. You might say I’ve been performing ever since. Though I initially struggled with learning to read, I developed a love for books and stories at a young age (Thank you Harry Potter!) When I discovered that I could perform audiobooks, I knew I’d found my calling. I’ve done 25+ audiobooks and counting! My wife and I have 4 little girls who have me blissfully wrapped around their little fingers!
