Mike Mirabella: Author and Songwriter Behind the Carla Stories Series

Mike Mirabella is an author and songwriter whose heartfelt works focus on compassion, understanding, and inclusion. In this interview, he shares the inspiration behind his Carla Stories series—which includes titles like Sister Butterfly, I Used to Be Shy, and Special People—as well as his book On the Luck of an Irish Sailor. These stories, rooted in his own life experiences, particularly with his daughter Carla who was born with Down syndrome, aim to foster empathy and celebrate individuality among readers of all ages.

From Personal Experience to Shared Stories

The motivation to write the Carla Stories arose from Mike and his wife Pam’s journey as parents to Carla Elaine. Early on, they faced uncertainty about what having a child with Down syndrome would mean. Instead of dwelling on challenges, they sought to highlight the positives—the joyous moments and successes that Carla brought to their lives. Mike explains:

“As we reconnoitered those in little booklets and what have you later on, we started writing them down and chronicling them and finding out that other people had similar kinds of experiences.”

He noticed that many parents in similar situations were focused on the downsides and struggles, often expressing a sense of despair. Mike desired to offer a fresh perspective—one emphasizing the upsides and blessings—encouraging families to recognize the joy and unique gifts their children bring.

Embracing a Positive Viewpoint

Mike’s background as an educator deeply informed his outlook. He worked as a middle and high school teacher, teaching Spanish and music, and often saw firsthand how a positive perspective could transform lives. He reflects on the different ways children with special needs engage with the world, noting how Carla’s interests often differed from those of other kids, such as being fascinated by insects and nature rather than typical playground games.

“It was very obvious to us that there was another game going on and needed to be aware of that.”

This attentive empathy is central to Mike’s stories, which invite readers to appreciate diverse ways of being and knowing.

The Musical Roots of the Carla Stories

Alongside storytelling, music plays a significant role in Mike’s creative process. His collaboration with fellow parent and accomplished songwriter Lenny led to the creation of songs inspired by their children’s lives and experiences. Initially, the stories started as real-life events that were then turned into lyrics and melodies, combining humor and heartfelt emotion.

Mike recalls:

“They started as happening stories. And then we just cockamamie stories and cockamamie music things that we threw together. It’s just the way we threw them together—the silly side of ourselves.”

This blend of music and narrative helps make complex emotions and topics accessible for children and families alike.

On the Luck of an Irish Sailor: A Personal Musical Journey

Mike’s other notable work, On the Luck of an Irish Sailor, grew from his teenage fascination with folk music and his heritage. Inspired by groups like the Kingston Trio and his sea-faring Italian family roots, the story interweaves personal history and playful song, illustrating Mike’s lifelong passion for storytelling through music.

Encouraging Empathy, Understanding, and Kindness

At its core, Mike Mirabella’s work calls for embracing what makes each individual unique and nurturing empathy in readers and listeners. His stories serve as tools to open hearts and foster conversations about difference, kindness, and belonging. Through sharing their experiences and creative work, Mike and Pam hope to empower others to find joy and strength in their journeys.

“We’re each ripples in each other’s lives, affecting and spreading kindness and understanding.”

Conclusion

Mike Mirabella’s journey from parent to author and songwriter exemplifies how personal challenges can inspire meaningful art that touches many lives. His commitment to highlighting compassion, self-acceptance, and joy in diversity makes the Carla Stories series a vital resource for parents, educators, and children navigating the complexities of difference with hope and kindness.
